Blondie
Help! Its my wedding in four weeks time (19th April) and i can't find a pair of statement 'bling' big sparkly chandelier/drop/dangly earrings! I don't want to wear a necklace just a pair of fabulous (but big) earrings. They have to be gold tone to match my dress. I have about £50 to spend. I have searched the internet and shopped til I drop but am struggling. Urgent help required!

Answer from
Camilla Morton
OK I hate things like this when I have been given a responsible job and you NEED an answer and it matters.
Have you tried Butler and Wilson? Have you looked online in Browns and don't knock this but have you looked in Accessories? They have the pricier posh bit, cant think what its called but its usually by the counter and they have more 'designer / one offy' earrings... I got a pair here that ended up inspiring a Dior couture show, and I have lost several ring a dingers that were from here... better to go for a costume jewellery moment as a) budget and b) they are not as heavy. If you go for diamonds this will be excellent as any flash pops that go off with cause the light to refract and bounce on your face throwing light in all the right places. Dont worry you will look gorge - brides always are radiant... if these places dont work post again and will rethink

that is as hard as a) who does the perfect jeans and b) where can I find the perfect man. They are illusive things, perfection. Mar 18, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
I would immediately suggest that you look at vintage places, on line at ebay or find a sale as old velvet is much juicer... that said if your heart is set on something new (though do bear in mind velvet to me always sounds heavier and more wintery why not look at Biba? Look at vintage stores like Circa and then look in Jaegar and I think I spotted on in Jigsaw

is this a fashion question I wonder... but yes it can be.... one solution is never work from home as you never escape... another idea is if you are stressed at work, make an effort dress up drag out the heels - dress the part, look the part, own it, work it.... and its a long weekend coming up

Answer from
Camilla Morton
looking groomed and glam - and elements of the 40s / 50s was tout le rage on the runways last season, softened a bit for the next season but that means it is still au currant on the highstreet. Bustiers can work if worn to shape and bolster the basics and curves... if you are looking to wear it as a feature, nope, not at the moment, unless you are off to a Moulin Rouge themed soiree

I work in IT with a load of men in a data centre. I am 36 and like to look sharp and need to buy trouser outfits that will make me look professional yet feminine. Any ideas?
Mar 16, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
It might be a man's world but in a sharp suit and pair of heels you can make it your own. Have you looked in Oasis? Jaegar? Jigsaw? They would be the first places i suggest. I would also look in mags and online and consider getting a suit where you have a trouser and a skirt option... Stella McCartney offers a bespoke range that has a tailor who once cut on Savile Row. You might have to dress to fit a job but you should also dress to impress and not run away from your feminine assets

Started wearing leggings and not covering them with a dress or long tshirt, so that I am seen in them in full from the waist down. Is this trendy? Although I seem to be getting quite a lot of attention, but not sure why that is?
Mar 16, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
hmmmm.... I am not sure that this is the best idea. It is not as much trendy as it is full hardy. Now if you have the perfect flat tummy and dont mind drawing attention to your crotch well I should say its OK in a gym... but in real life it might be more than a mere mortal can handle. It might look brill, but if it were I, I would consider draping a T shirt or tying a jumper so modest is covered... Less is more...

Are expensive heels really more comfortable? Or would I just be paying for the name...?
Mar 15, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Manolo's aren't just the name they are comfortable too. You can get affordable pairs on ebay and in the sales and if you think about it you can buy a cheap pair, a lot of plasters, get a cab home and another cheap pair - OR you can do it right first time....
Hobbs, Jigsaw also do comfy going to work type heels, Olivia Morris shoes for Faith great but they might be a bit too pole dancery. What about looking on line at brownsfashion.com or net-a-porter? You can see the cost without fainting in a shop...

Well there are so many answers here. I would say heels - a pair of Manolos - and before you balk at the cost look on ebay, in the sales, in NY as much as full price. Manolos will lift you (physically and mentally) and make the demons of the day stay at bay. Manolos are empowering, sexy, seductive, they are a weeks gym work out without any of the drag of doing it. Manolos, trainers, biker boots, wedges, ballet pumps and slippers.... its a tough call to chose just one pair...

yes - I do. My daughter and I are currently looking for a formal (but not necessarily strapless) dress for her year 11 ball, but she is a small size 6, and fairly petite and is finding trouble finding styles to fit her. We have a budget of around £200. Any suggestions?
Mar 10, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
When I went to my school ball (OK this admittedly was about 100 years ago, and I was 18!) I wore a gold bias cut dress that was from Oasis but you would swear it was a Galliano. Because you have youth and beauty on your side the highstreet will be your friend. You can try looking in Libertys /Fenwicks or have you thought of seeing if there are any vintage markets or indeed a pattern you could follow from a magazine? (VOGUE patterns of a long Maxi Ossie Clark is what I was thinking of here). Browns Focus or www.brownsfashion.com or www.net-a-porter.com could have ideas. Maybe jovovitch hawk, stella, one of these... look in sale sections on webs, or indeed just at the styles and then see what's out on the highstreet - I would say formal but dont forget your age... not too formal... its (sadly!) not the era of Austen!

How do you walk in heels?
Mar 10, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
This is something of a specialist and favvvvvv subject of mine... There are several options here but most of all the key is practice! (which unlike other things is no great hardship). I wrote a book called How to Walk in High Heels where Manolo Blahnik helps on this subject but in a nut shell you want to learn to aisle glide - go to the supermarket, get a trolley, shoulders back, head high, heels on and take things for a spin...
Also, type "how to walk in high heels" into the Search bar (above) and Mimi's treatise on the subject will come up.

Tocca, Diane Von Furstenberg, Issa, Stella McCartney, Chloe, or look on Comptoir des Cotonniers, Jigsaw, or take a peek on www.brownsfashion.com or www.net-a-porter.com. Have you thought of looking in Jaegar they have really got some great things in there at the moment, Hobbs, Nicole Farhi, Browns, Liberty, why not start browsing through net-a-porter.com or looking at style.com / vogue.com to see what the trends are for the season. I would suggest you look at a light summer jacket or a pashmina that you can wear over your shoulders - this could be the pink and mix it with another colour if you prefer or you might find the perfect total look and be a true English Rose

I would suggest VINTAGE! There are of course the inspiring and the brand new brides - in BROWNS BRIDES - but if you look at old VOGUE patterns, old glossy magazines and you can use this as a starting point of inspiration... one of my friends learnt (!!!!! YIKES!) to make her own dress so it was something she made for her special day. If your sewing skills however shrink at this challenge my favourite vintage fair is www.pa-antiques.co.uk start scouting about now and you should snag something really unique, special and wont cost a mint Good Luck!

well, My Fair Lady, this is what Audrey Hepburn was in training for - the big thing is A HAT! (Gulp!) Debenhams have some lovely ones by Philip Treacy, but Stephen Jones would be my first choice - he is in Fenwicks and Browns. I would think a smart hat and light summer coat and dress would be perfect. Don't totally splash on stuff you will never wear again - but do wear your best - this is the day to dress up and enjoy. Why not google the event and look at images of previous attempts - don't go looking like a hen night gone wrong -think Cecil Beaton and Hepburn and you will have the right shopping companion icons.

well this isn't strictly speaking fashion - but this is fast becoming a trend at weddings the best man can speak for the boys and the girls... well we want our say too.. idea is boys get shamed - the girls get bigged up. Say why she is such a great catch, what is so great about her, what you adore about her, how he and she are meant to be - and if this guy ever stuffs up how she is a great catch for any of the other men present today.... have a look at best man speeches or in my second book A Girl For All Seasons - there is a whole chapter devoted to weddings what to do and not.

Feb 26, 08
Answer from

yup but you might skid about - best if you are doing this is a) get the posh ones that are called 'sandal foot' b) pinch the seam that runs along the toe line and pull it so it tucks under your toes - this will also give you a bit of a better grippablity. Fish nets no probs with open toe - ditto to opaque but isnt the whole point of open toe to show off the toes (and dont forget nail varnish!)

she has come for your brains not your designer labels - besides she is going to be wearing the hottest and the top label so why try and compete on that front? I had to interview her a few years ago and nearly gave myself a nervous breakdown.. I had Galliano sending a red chiffon cocktail dress from Paris to NYC (she famously doesn't think much of the head to toe black thing) and it was only when a snow storm arrived I slammed on the brakes so to speak and went in what I wear, i.e. NOT a cocktail gown in Dec in the snow at 3pm! Anna is one of the smartest and greatest editors in the world because she sees through all the fluff and goes for content... let me know how it goes x

i think that sounds very chic, and very next season... very similar to the vibe of the Dior haute couture... and what is about to hit Paris. Think Man Ray photographs or some austere lady from archive Vanity Fairs... I think this is not a look that is too young but a look that is very lady like and chic. Vintage Jean Muir as well as on the highstreet - I would hazard a guess that Jigsaw or Nicole Farhi might be starting points. It will hit the high street but you are way ahead of the trends... Will be traveling to Hawaii in March~ am lost as what to wear on the plane that would be suitable/ adaptable for both climates? Was planning on jersey dress, navy mid weight cotton jacket, pashmina, and leggings.. I know they are passe, but I thought I could just wear them to the airport, on the plane and then whip them off and slap on a pair of flip-flops??
Any other ideas other than cotton trousers, T and jacket?? x
Feb 23, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
sorry i have been taking so long to come back to you - I actually asked my friend in Mr Galliano's studio this as I know they LOVE going to Hawaii. Long haul flights are a total headache in style stakes - comfort is key. I once wore jeans that were a tad too tight (as a boyfriend was meeting me at the airport) and after a 7 hr flight I had welt marks on my behind from the studs being forced into my peachy complexion. Not a good look. I would say jersey dress, cotton jacket / cardi, pashmina lovely to sleep in and leggings or even the inflight socks. Nothing that digs into you. Nothing that creases. Lightly layer and maybe take a fresh t shirt to slip on in the ladies while waiting for your suitcase when you land. Comfort is key over fashion (a rare statement to be made by me) MOST essential is the sun glasses - for the sunshine and any lack of sleep. Have fun. Don't try the return in grass skirt and hoola hoola flowers could be very itchy.

At Christmas I bought some very bright pink boots! I thought they were lovely, and have worn them to work with a nice long black skirt. One of my best friends saw me coming along the corridor and said"Oh! no-one is going to look at your face!" It took me by surprise and she obviously thought I had made a big fashion "faux pas" ! What do you think? I wear a lot of black as I am not a thin person - and thought these colourful boots would brighten up these dark winter days. I had the impresssion she thought them to be on the "tarty" side. What do you think?
Feb 23, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
well i think that they sound fabulous!!! I wear a lot of black too and often wear just a splash of colour in the shoes. I think that you can go head to toe in black and flash it up with the feet. I think they do add a coquettish and fun side to always wearing black. I say wear them, to hell with it - people looked at Dorothy's shoes, Cinderella's slippers and they were so dazzled they may have looked there first but they most certainly will want to travel up and see your lovely face!

I have just arrived in Paris for the shows and have just had this problem myself... Its cold still so you still need tights. I am into Falke at the moment, M&S a close second. Black opaques are slimming, and warmer than stockings, stay up rather than fall down. Any skirt knee length or over you need them. Sheer hose smooth things out nicely before the sun comes out... if in doubt stick to jeans

go to www.brownsfashion.com or indeed www.net-a-porter.co.uk they both have the best ideas - and even if the price is wrong its a start. I liked the Marc Jacobs jellies - but listen don't stoop too low - look at Nicole Kidman, Katie Holmes, Sophie Dahl... stand tall, stand proud and do it in heels... which are said to do wonders for the pelvic floor muscles (as well as figure) Get him looking up at you!!

Camilla Morton
Hi - Mimi is probably better to answer this than me - BUT as it was Mimi who gave me MY first break maybe it is time that I took on the mantle... Basically WORK EXPERIENCE is the key to getting into fashion. I studied Fashion at St Martins after a foundation course at Kingston but the only way you can really get into fashion is to climb the slippery ladder one cup of tea or couture dress at a time. The Devil wears Prada is TAME to the reality, but at the same time as much as this type of person there are angels and fairies and it is a land of make believe. Write to magazines and newspapers for a weeks work experience - but they tend not to take people till they are A levels or 18 . It is quite a competitive field so until this point see if there is a student magazine you can contribute to, is there a designer that needs a slave in the run up to their show... This is why students are good as they can assist and make it part of their studies - you mustn't miss school! Writing is something that you more fall into than wake up dreaming of. I was a fashion assistant on shoots, did returns, did tea runs, answered the phone, worked in shops, worked dressing windows, tried PR, tried styling, tried all sorts - and I truly believe this is the best way. You have to try all aspects and really understand what it is you want to write about before you crack open the lap top. Don't lose faith - it just takes time - bit like making a Christmas pudding. Read a LOT - the books you read now will puff up your vocab for moments when you are thinking now how the heck can I describe the 90th blue puffy dress that I have seen today.. Fashion is 20%talent and 80% luck - right place, right person, right time - and if you want it enough your fairy godmother / godfather will find you!!

what do you mean?? I have been looking through the Sunday papers today that have been awash with dresses - this new season is sugar coated by the return of the dress (that in my opinion never really went away). Dresses are deliciously on trend for spring summer - from high street to haute couture - its what makes being a girl so much better than being a boy (well that and the make up, the shoes, the handbags...)

I don't know - I want one too and realised this too late and the one i had been dreaming of had gone. I saw a good style one in OASIS and lovely looking one in M&S but it really depends on the cut, style and cost - Nicole Farhi might be one option, Lawrence Corner the army outlet another (for the Top Gun moment)... maybe let me know when YOU find one...

Oh no! Hate that! OK I wrote a book called How to Walk in High Heels as this is the exact prob I had... until I met Manolo. Here's the thing imagine your hips are doing a figure of eight, like a game of hulp hoop, lean back (i.e. shoulders back, head held high just not too far). Best thing I can suggest is go to the supermarket - yes seriously - go to the supermarket. Get a trolley. Get the heels out. Take them for a spin and use the trolley as your stabiliser. You have aisles and aisles of smooth surface to get used to the things... Keep them on, practice and all should be well... Manolo Blahnik (who did Sex and City shoes) gives some more advise in book too.

How to rid myself of fat on tummy
Jan 20, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
There are dramatic answers to your question - including liposuction and other invasive procedures. But my advice would be to start a regime of 10, then 20, then 30 sit ups a day. Start slowly, and build up, feeling comfortable but a little challenged each day. Diet is important too - particularly since fat on the tummy in women (the apple shape) carries the possibility of Type 2 diabetes down the line. Take advice from your doctor, but start that exercise plan as soon as you can.

I think that looking on www.brownsfashion.com is a good idea. Thankfully high waisted jeans have returned. I love the 18th Amendement ones, but Jil Sander did do the best high waisted jeans, and good old 501 Levis will never fail. Go for a straight leg, indigo (dark) dye and high waist and don't be scared off - jeans are not age elitist

Answer from

first of all lets start at the bottom. Tights. Opaque - maybe the cashmere M&S ones. Next I would say LAYERING. Wrap dress. Cardigan. Pashmina. Coat. Gloves. Hat. It really depends on the time of year but I would still say that a Diane Von Furstenberg (seem to be saying this a lot today!) Marni, Nicole Farhi, Jigsaw, Hobbs type number is what you are after. you want to have elements of both Hepburns. I have a long burgundy knit dress by Jil Sander (from www.brownsfashion.com) that would probably do the trick perfectly for you. Heels are of course a given but if you are going out onto the track wear wedges or you might sink in the muddy lawn.

Jan 20, 08
Answer from

I know exactly what you mean - I have just dumped my big bag and given up rummaging around for half an hour to find anything and gone petite again. I was obsessed with a cute cute Prada clutch - with bow over front of bag that you could slip your hand under to hold - but my real find and true addiction is my Felix Rey, a NY brand but in Fenwicks. That said just read the b word - BUDGET. I LOVE accessories, Topshop and Claires accessories and what I would suggest is looking at the make up bags or indeed the larger 'wallet' things that they do as these tend to do the trick. I had a wicked glasses case last year from accessories that doubled nicely as a clutch when I went off to the shows without said essential last season

Jan 20, 08
Answer from

that depends on what exactly you want and how warm you want to be. M&S still rule the world for thermals and their range of winter woollies is fab. I hate being cold and layer up with Jigsaw, Zadzig Voltaire, Gap, Miss Selfridge and the new season chunky knits from Stella (www.brownsfashion.com) and PHI would keep you snug, while Moncler jackets will certainly prevent any freezing

I am mother of the bride in august this year suggestions what to wear
Jan 20, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
i think that the nicest quote I ever read about 'what did the bride wear' is when Linda McCartney married Paul all she wanted written about what she wore was 'a smile'! Weddings are such amazingly happy occasions - especially for YOU! OK so do you know what shade of flowers your daughter has chosen? You might want to fit in with this. Is she going for lilacs? or a strong red and go for a shape that suits you - and only wear a hat if you want to - it is not a necessity. I would suggest you look in Hobbs, Harrods, Matches, I don't know where you live but basically go to a Selfridges or big store, get some inspiration, get your daughter to come along too as it is your day as much as hers. I think Diane von Furstenberg, Nicole Farhi, Armani, Alberta Ferreti can be good inspirational starting points - see if you like these styles and then see what your budget allows. I love Fenwicks, Liberty and John Lewis - and if you can go soon you might get a real super duper reduction too!

What is the point of couture?
Jan 20, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
what is the point of couture??? are you kidding me?? Couture is the start of it all - the nucleus of fashion ideas. It is from here all the season stems. As John Galliano says the best way to explain it is couture is the eau de parfum, the raw, undiluted idea - the ready to wear the eau de toilette - both have the essence of the season that will then be translated to what trends and styles we get on the high street. Far better to log on and see what the looks are in their wildest, finest most perfect creation. Couture is made to measure and magical. It is one of craftsmanship. It is a work of art - if offered would you prefer a Picasso original or an Athena Poster?? That is basically the difference. If there was no couture there would be no point in all the rest - couture leads the rest follows. Couture is a legacy and tradition that feeds the whole cycle

wedding abroad in may wot to wear?
Jan 20, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
depends on the country, the weather and the type of wedding but google what the climes are like and LUCKY you - get to the tail end of the sales and scoop up a Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) or Issa wrap (see www.netaporter.com / www.brownsfashion.com) as they are easy to pack, and a splash of colour will make a paler beauty look healthier than perhaps we are. Booking in for a spray tan before jetting off also an option. If wedding in Siberia obviously you may want to adapt this advise. Use the sales to get something now but probably best to avoid white - why confuse the groom - and likewise see if there are any colours to avoid, what colour flowers at the wedding, and black though a style classic is one colour to use sparingly on days like today (though destination dependent - when I went to a wedding in the states I looked like Pretty in Pink barbie whilst all the others were dipped in Black velvet). Be fabulous and catch the bouquet

to go sur le Promenade a Nice what you need to remember is that they were so enamoured of the English style that the chicest street is named after us. Nice (and nearby Cannes) has every designer label and boutique going but I think keep it nautical and nice - this was after all one of Coco Chanel favourite haunts. Think Katherine Hepburn, Grace Kelly, palazzo pants, something twenties, elegant and charming - its basically Paris meets Brighton (with none of the arcade games) and a few topless beauties, weather permitting. how NICE. Are catwalk collections really driving what we wear now?
Jan 19, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
designers should be what is driving what we are wearing now - but which designer should we be looking at. If you are doing this from the purest fashion sense you should look to the couture designers because they are the eau de parfum - the raw undiluted delight if you like that will take a while to filter down to us on the highstreet. BUT then again the invisible designers behind names like TOPSHOP, Gap etc are probably unsung heroes in their own right as they are the ones who not translate these thoughts they initiate their own. long long away - once upon a time - when I started gate crashing into shows there was no internet, there was no style.com and there was only a smidge of the magazines that are out today... Now there are so many people coverage and reporting on the shows that we get so flooded with coverage that the designers (and more crucially the customers / us) are bored of the stuff by the time it hits the shops as you've seen the top / colour / style so many gazillion times you think its old hat that catwalk might lead but now we are saying hurry hurry and whats next after that... lordie dee dee - its us that are driving the catwalks, or driving them bananas at least...

Sheer or opaque tights? Am confused
Jan 18, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
depends - are your legs up to the stress or do you too walk into desks and have bruises from who knows how. Next thing is honestly do you intend to wear a very short skirt? These are just two things to consider though you are at the end of the day your own boss...
1) how short or flared is the skirt? Consider that when you leap into the air and get whirled around in an exciting embrace by Mr Wonderful showing all of Waterloo station your knickers might not be ideal - go opaque.
2) if you have walked into said desk or have bits you want evened out sheer can do the job but for extra safety go opaque.
Rule of thumb is opaque - winter, sheer when it gets summery.

What do fashionistas do when they aren’t at shows? Do they just sip champagne and shop?
Jan 01, 08
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Forget the stereotyping - first of all very few editors and fashionistas are actually paid enough to live the lifestyle they fill the pages of their magazines with; secondly there is simply not enough time to even entertain this kind of decadence. If you look at the year’s show schedule there is barely time for the fashion pack to unpack – let alone lead this frivolous lifestyle.
Show months run thus:
January – couture and menswear
February – ready to wear
March – ready to wear and advertising campaigns
May – cruise
June – Graduate Fashion Week, menswear
July – menswear and couture
September – ready to wear
October – ready to wear and advertising
November – cruise/pre-collection
If you look at this you will see how little time for error there is as the months not travelling are spent creating the next collection, or shooting what you’ve just seen, job depending. There is no such thing as a day off in fashion – apart from perhaps August when all the couture houses and factories shut in Europe, and the ritzy head to St. Tropez, while the fledgling designers have one month to gird their loins ready to expose their ideas at London Fashion Week.

I want to become a model, how do I walk on a catwalk?
Dec 05, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Before you walk on the catwalk I am afraid you have to go through castings and indeed get represented by a model agency. In Europe you have to be over 18 to be able to walk the runways, and you have to have the height and build as well as the looks - all of which I am quite sure you do. Best place to start is to go to a modelling agency - Storm, Select, Models One just some of the big names with a few photos as well as yourself and ask them if they would consider taking you on, what you need to do etc. Do NOT pay for a portfolio to be taken, at the early stages non professional shots can be enough. If you get taken on then the castings start. This is when designers ask you to walk for them. Erin O'Connor syas that she imagines she has wing mirrors on each hip when she is walking - this is a good way of describing it. Watch her, Naomi, Gisele, the greats in action on style.com and shoulders back, head high and off you glide. Good Luck!

How do you get a handbag named after you?
Dec 02, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
There is the Gisele, the Stam, the Kelly and of course the Birkin. They all came about as the bags were keen to share their name with an icon of their time, to share beauty – and presumably to cure the icon of her clutter and chaos. Grace Kelly used her Hermes to carefully conceal not only all her paraphernalia but her pregnancy (when shot for the cover of Life Magazine in 1956). Gisele and Stam (Jessica) opened Luella Bartley’s New York shows and in return for this had a Mulberry design christened after themselves, and Jane Birkin? Well she is a girl after my own heart. In 1981 the actress inadvertently dropped the entire contents of her bag on the head of the Hermes chief accessory designer as she tried to cram the contents into an overhead locker. The avalanche of contents inspired the designer to come up with a style that could cater with the clutter – and found the Birkin experience unforgettable. This was just the start of the celebrity endorsement – you however can also be a bag – by logging on to www.anyahindmarch.com/gift_assistance

What's the real difference between high-street fashion and catwalk clothes? I can't work out why designer stuff is so expensive
Nov 30, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Some people think this is a vast and scary gap - like the difference between classical and pop music - but no, in all truth the gap is closing, or in fact has closed. The obvious, and immediate, difference of course is price – yes, items hot from the catwalk can cost £4,000 a dress, £1,000 a bag, but at the same time they are the ultimate in luxury, limited edition, pieces of art, the first time this idea has been seen, etc. The high street also offers originals but aren’t quite the cut, aren’t quite the fabric – but can offer the look at a snip of the price. Now it doesn’t really matter which end of the spectrum you shop, in fact the smart cookie mixes both – indeed there is so much coverage on the internet and the immediacy of fashion is such that catwalk shows can’t be as elitist as they used to be, and designers are now getting stiff competition from what they once wrote off as the rip offs. With new looks hitting the stores from Primark to Prada at the same time high-end designers have to justify their price tags – while the high street has to keep on-trend and on top of their game and not wait to do watered-down versions (hence the rise of ‘celebrity’ collaborations, such as Kate Moss for Topshop, Cavalli for H&M, Stella for Adidas). You, the shopper, are the winner on every front.

How do you get a handbag named after you?
Nov 30, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
This was just the start of the celebrity endorsement – you however can also be a bag – by logging on to www.anyahindmarch.com/Gift_assistance/gift_assistance

When should you wear British designers? And WHO is the best of British?
Nov 27, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
This week is actually the PERFECT week to go all patriotic. Tuesday 27th November is not only the night to dress up – as it is the British Fashion Awards – it is also Manolo Blahnik’s birthday. There you go – two reasons to celebrate in style the best of British fashion. The alumni of stars is endless, from high street to haute couture. From hints on who to wear log onto www.londonfashionweek.co.uk or if shopping go to www.brownsfashion.com. Browns is a very good option when looking for young starlets, as store owner Mrs Burstein was the woman who discovered John Galliano and Hussein Chalayan – buying both of their graduate collections and famously putting them in her windows. Marios Schwab, Stella McCartney, Paul Smith and Stephen Jones are among the home-grown talent she stocks.

What's the most seductive shade of the season?
Nov 26, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Maybe you have already decided to follow Roberto Cavalli’s leopard-print H&M invasion for your office party look? If not as the season to take everything – especially dress codes – to excess arrives there is the very valid squeal of ‘what on earth do I wear’. Well? Take a leaf out of Valentino’s book: make it RED. Forget Santa Claus, the Scarlet lady steals the show every time and makes the mere mortal more fatale than Jessica Rabbit. There is a shade to suit every complexion - if you don't want the whole look, go for patent footwear or simply a lipstick or pillar-box shade of nail varnish. Whatever - it works. Think a wasp to a flame, a bull to red rag (and there is even an obvious song for your date to warble should a Karaoke situation, or enough alcohol, be part of the evening).

When are the new seasons unveiled? Am I right or is it a different season to the one we are in or are we a season out? Help!
Nov 26, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Fashionistas always like to stay ahead – and indeed for glossy magazines with a three-month lead-time, and to give designers enough time to produce the collections to get them to the stores, there has to be a bit of a gap. The spring/summer shows have to happen in September/October, while the autumn/winter collections happen in February/March. The Cruise (resort or ‘pre-collections’ depending on the poshness of the house) shows are ironically the less covered and hyped, but in fact the big sellers; they happen in November and May (May is for summer Cruise and November the winter trousseau). The only thing that is a scramble for design houses is the January couture (which is the spring collection), as this is often what the A list want to wear to the Oscars, ten days later. As it is haute couture, you can’t just nick the look hot off the runway: it has to be made-to-measure for that girl, so it's a new level of service. Let's not forget most wedding dresses require you to order six months in advance, so with a ten-day turnaround you can see why designers do get their knickers in a twist about doing the red carpet Academy Award night.

How do you fall off your heels well?
Nov 22, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Is there a way to fall off your heels well?! Ask Naomi Campbell, Karen Elson, Jessica Stam - some of the pretty faces that have come a cropper with the towering monsters that they are presented with. As Erin O Connor says its a bit like taking part in the Krypton Factor when walking the runway. To fall off well you have to laugh and make it look like it didn't hurt, and really wasn't that amusing, Naomi case and point. It was one of her finest turns.

How does a designer guarantee an A-list front row?
Nov 22, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
A designer worth his diamente should always have a little black book of glittering friends. The A list like to be seen - and to be seen somewhere chic. Marlene Dietrich, Vivien Leigh, Olivia de Havilland were all front row when Dior started - and if you take a peek along this front row, Versace or such like today the sparkle factor is still there. Designers want to dress the on screen icons - and they in return need lots of frocks for all the red carpet affairs. Besides, think how lack lustre the week would be without a few famous faces off as well as on the catwalk? And who can refuse a private jet and trip to a show with new wardrobe thrown in?!

How many fittings happen?
Nov 22, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
That depends on the designer, the dress, the look, the price tag. Say we're talking couture - and why not this is the ultimate - this could start with toiles and then tweak its way through between three to five and maybe more, plus the final fittings to get it to sit just right on the models.... Couture is made for a one on one, made to measure, so its got to fit like a glove. Ready to wear earns its name for the reason that less fittings are required, but couture trained, or a perfectionist, its going to be at least three.

Why are front rows so ‘A list’ at the shows?
Nov 19, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Don’t for a moment think it is a coincidence! Let’s face it – the front row is the best in the house, so you want to have the beautiful and photogenic sitting in them. Fashion and celebrity are very happy partners as both are peacocks – both like to look good, to be admired and to be seen to have the ‘coolest’ friends. ‘Hello Darling, Mwah, Mwah’. It is also good for business for both. It’s a two fold thing – the big houses want the association, the smaller houses crave it – star branding adds more power to the punch than a huge billboard will to the label’s appeal. Jennifer Lopez in Versace, even wedding at Versace, Sharon Stone in Dior, Scarlett Johansson for Vuitton… and then for the smaller labels (Kate Bosworth at Luella, Thakoon) where you know there wasn’t a budget to get them there, you think, hmmm this label could be really special. Signing the stars to the brand brings even more power to the name – it's the ultimate ‘Power Couple’.
Alternatively you could guarantee your A list A row with A list backers – such as Puff Daddy backing Zac Posen. Or maybe common sense could be the simple answer behind this? Far nicer to see a pap shot of yourself front row than in the dry cleaners - so from Lily Allen to SJP, Chanel to Narciso, when it comes to fashion week and you’ve a film or a song to push – do it front row and fabulous.

Why do the celebrities have their own brands? Surely it’s far too much like hard work
Nov 19, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
After sitting in the front row, and indeed after being dressed and wooed by every designer under the sun, it’s only natural for the seriously stylish and successful to think ‘hang on a minute, I could do that’. Some have hit the runways, some have had success, others have gone back to study the front row a bit harder. The best include: Gwen Stefani’s LAMB, J Lo’s Sweetface andVictoria Beckham’s collaboration for Rock and Republic. The newest offerings are the Olsen Twin’s line The Row, Justin Timberlake’s William Rast and the Miller Sisters (Sienna and Savannah that is) Twenty8Twelve. There’s an instant hook for the journalist, store and buyer, but for the punter, it may be better to buy Hello! Or Vogue. As for the choice of perfumes the supply is endless. Which one has the biggest star power rating is up to you.

What is the worst fashion crime for fashion editors?
Nov 19, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
At the shows the top editors will be very careful not to enter fashion purgatory by clashing two major design names – a Vuitton with a Gucci, a Chanel with a YSL. If being extra careful and politically correct, and thinking of the advertising revenues for their magazines, they will try to wear the right designer to the appropriate show (assuming they are top-level enough to have drivers to ferry this statement about in, and indeed the designer or PR to notice this allegiance to the cause). Milliner Stephen Jones comments that the most important element of style is conviction – while John Galliano thinks that the worst of all crimes is to not make any effort at all. ‘If you look like you’ve tried, even if it’s a disaster you get A for effort!’ he says.

What’s the quickest way to get this season’s look?
Nov 19, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Other than the A-list lifestyle, arm candy, Black Amex card, couture wardrobe and more handbags than there are coffee varieties at Starbucks? Easy. Sure you could get the latest, hottest bag (YSL Downtown) or the highest brightest heels (try Dior’s Samurai platforms in acid green) but the quickest - and ssshhh! Cheapest! - instant style transformation is a blow out. With Frances Farmer, Rita Hayworth, Veronica Lake and the cast of George Cukor’s ‘The Women’ the main muses this season at Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Dior, high glamour is tout le rage. Sets, kiss curls, dry shampoos and nights in curlers, and above all getting someone to do it for you, can make even last season’s groove look new.

How do you keep your seams straight?
Nov 19, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
With all the screen sirens and Forties glamour, the season of dressing up up up up has well and truly arrived. So it’s definitely time to know how to keep your seams straight. First things first, don’t make life harder than it needs to be: get stockings. Tights will pull that gusset and pretty soon that straight line will turn into a wiggle. Get suspenders to yank the things into position. Or go for pairs that go just to the knee, which can be wedged firmly into place with a garter (you can even go to extremes like Marilyn Monroe’s character Sugar Cane in ‘Some Like it Hot’, who stored her hip flask of gin there… but just see how far you want to go). The trick is in putting the stocking on – before you roll the nylon up the leg, as well as moisturising the leg, smear a line of Vaseline where you hope the seam will lie. Then, slowly, roll the seam over this guide and let the stitching stick to this point. Volia! You will be picture pin-up perfect.

Is Paris the fashion capital of the world?
Nov 14, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
It claims to be – it is where couture was founded but don’t let them take all the credit. The Chambre Syndicale, the body that governs and organises haute couture, and indeed haute couture itself, was in fact founded by an Englishman - Charles Fredrick Worth (October 13, 1825 – March 10, 1895).

How do I get into fashion?
Nov 14, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Like most things – hard work. You can study it – at St. Martins or LCF, two of the most hyped, see Graduate Fashion Week for ideas and past students http://www.gfw.org.uk. Or you can learn it, through work experience, which starts off with sending back returns and tea-making and rise to writing, styling or designing. But, most of all, you have to live it. Alexander McQueen did work experience on Savile Row, Stella McCartney at Lacroix. Even the greats had to start somewhere and becoming intern is the best place to start. Fashion is a vocation, a way of life (you might have seen the Devil Wears Prada), but you need to experience your own Miranda Prestley as well as learn your trade. Write to your favourite magazines, newspapers, design houses and ask for work experience, assist friends of friends and be prepared to not earn for a bit. Don’t be put off if this is your dream make it happen– as Anna Wintour herself said – the best people get fired at least once.

How can you shop on a budget and stay on trend?
Nov 14, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
You can look online at www.style.com, but fashion is actually becoming much more individual and personality led - don’t be fooled into thinking all the editors have designer-only cupboards. Look on the runways - as well as net-a-porter.com or brownsfashion.com - and mix the cult labels with the new labels, the vintage with the high-street versions. If you want to look hot off the runway, read the reviews, work out how Marc Jacobs made editors swoon, who the muse of the city is and interpret this trend before the next city’s fashion shows start. You only need to get the silhouette, get a colour, get a new shoe or bag and the rest of your look can camouflage previous seasons.

How do I wear knee high socks?
Nov 14, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Curse Sarah Jessica Parker, and the much covered filming of Sex and the City, as a new trend has been borne. It first hit the runways at Prada, and then it was thought only trendy editors and magazines would take note but now, thanks to SJP and the variety of styles available in Kurt Geiger, Topshop and Jonathan Aston knee highs are no longer solely to be worn with school uniform. Knee highs might seem a mix of St. Trinians and early Britney Spears but this is a trend that your boyfriend might learn to love. If wearing pencil skirts wear socks that stop under the knee – as anything above this will wriggle down against the fabric friction. Over the knee socks are for full skirts or short skirts (worn with opaque tights). Good legs are preferable for both.

I'm debating what to buy my girlfriend for Christmas. Are diamonds still a girl’s best friend?
Nov 14, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Not if you ask Coco Chanel. Though the fiery tempered couturier was crazy for her jewels, in fact pearls were more her signature stone. She was big on wearing jewels with daywear but when her then-lover the Duke of Westminster wanted to show his affection, he simply told her how she lit up his world. He bought all the lampposts in the Borough of Westminster (that’s all the smart streets such as Old Bond Street, Berkeley Square, Conduit Street, etc) and had them painted black, then added his gold crest and that of two crossed Cs – Chanel’s logo. Even today everytime London lights up it’s a poor second to how his world was when he saw Chanel. Good gift.

How do you walk the catwalk?
Oct 31, 07
Answer from
Camilla Morton
Hips out, shoulders back and straight – imagine there is a rope round your waist and this is tugging you forward. Take long, exaggerated paces and just hope that steps haven’t been worked into the set. Head held high, count your footsteps, one elephant, two elephant, three elephant and don't bother to smile, that costs extra and can distract from the clothes.

Contagiously. Linda Evangelista stood next to Naomi Campbell backstage at Christian Dior for the July couture and despite being the most beautiful women in the room they were glued to the screen and watching every move and pose till it was their turn. Gisele however looked like she had gone for a walk in the park and waved to her boyfriend en route.

If you truly want to, you will do it. If you are at St. Martin’s, your very street cred depends on it. Are you a hairdresser or make-up artist’s assistant? Dresser? Model (or, maybe slightly easier to blag – sorry – a model booker)? Runner for the in-house crew? PR? Hilary Alexander’s assistant and we are on deadline?? Knowing the address and simply wanting to get in is start enough.

No. The clothes are put on them and then taken off and packed away – they can request things, and maybe they might get sent them if they are good, but the samples have to go off to production, or to shoots, and most importantly could be shot in the advertising campaigns for the coming season.
