I have noticed my neck is sagging, again what is the best cream
Mar 15, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Lancome have recently revamped their skin care range and have included in it a new and improved formulation for their Renergie Morpholift, £58. It contains a skin-tautening system that helps to redefine jowls and sagging skin and is available in a face cream, night cream, eye cream and even a neck treatment.
Alternatively try Carole Maggio's Facercise (facercise.com) for a comprehensive workout for your face. Her series of movements (a little like gurning) help to reshape and retrain slack facial muscles in the way we exercise our bodies from the neck down.

Larger Boots stores stock the Avene range, developed by dermatologists in France who specialise in skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. The products contain thermal mineral waters, the same healing water used at the Avene medical centre and spa in Saint Odile. Clinically proven to care for and strengthen sensitive skin, try the Thermal Spring Water Spray, £5.25. Saturate two cotton wool pads with the water and then place the pads over your closed eyes to help soothe and strengthen your irritated eyelids.

Hi there - I answered this Question about a week ago - you can find it with Search, but here's the Answer I gave:
If you want a really glossy high shine look like Michelle's then I think a good old vegetable dye is what you are looking for. A rich brown would also be much easier to manage and there are so many incredible colour -boosting shampoos and conditioners on the market that I really don't think you'd look back. Plus the re-growth would be less obvious and root-touch-ups not so much of a bother if you took your mousy hair darker.

what is the best cream for crows feet?
Mar 15, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
The most effective way to relax them is with Botox, which will stop you from being able to scrunch the area up so much when you smile but which still looks reasonably natural as long as you don’t have too much (it’s less of a giveaway, doing it in this area, than across the forehead where it usually is wildly obvious if all your frown lines suddenly vanish). To find a decent doctor who does this, you can try www.cosmeticdoctors.co.uk. Creams with peptides and other muscle-relaxing ingredients can do a certain amount to lessen the appearance of wrinkles, but not as much as a needle can.

Since having children (and never getting enough sleep!) I have perpetual dark circles under my eyes that no eye cream has yet been able to erase... any suggestions?
Mar 13, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Alice Hart-Davis says
"Dark circles are really difficult to tackle. They are a v individual thing and if you've tried all the various 'lifestyle' remedies (see below, I've copied over the advice I gave to Kelli a few days ago)then I can see you might want to do something more drastic but you can't do anything surgically for under-eye circles since the problem is usually a loss of volume, in the form of fat pads below the eye, rather than excess skin.
The one new thing that CAN be done for under-eye circles is to inject a hyaluronic-acid gel filler like Restylane along the inside of the rim of the eye-socket (yes, eek, it's a delicate area and it needs a delicate hand, and your eyes will look bruised and baggy for a week or two afterwards before you see the real results), but if done by an expert, this "tear-trough" procedure can give the eye area a boost and make you look much less tired.
Re diet - eating badly, along with drinking too much alcohol and not getting enough sleep, certainly make dark circles worse, so eating more fresh veg and fruit, and drinking more water is always a good idea.
Sometimes dark circles can mean that you're a bit anaemic (your GP can do a basic blood test to check) but it may just be a genetic thing, in which case it's just bad luck and you need to hide the evidence"

it's worth trying some of the many volumising products (shampoos, conditioners, styling lotions) that you can find at most chemists - they contain ingredients that coat and thicken the hairs and make them stand away from each other, to add the appearance of volume. And eat a good diet, with plenty of protein (especially at breakfast and lunchtime) and omega-3 essential fatty acids

how do i get rid of bags under my eyes
Mar 13, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Eye bags, if a result of tiredness, are actually best rectified with a cold compress of either chilled black tea, or even two refrigerated teaspoons. The cold temperature helps dissipate any fluid responsible for the puffiness whilst the anti-oxidants in tea also help to decongest the area.
If it's age-related bags that you are worried about, surgery is obviously an option, but if you're not quite ready for the surgeon's scalpel, give Lancome Renergie Morphologie Eye Cream a go. It contains a skin-tautening ingredient that will help diminish, but not completely rectify, any under eye sagging.

Mar 12, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Over to my colleague Rebecca Howard on this one: Other than IPL, I'm afraid that the bad news is that there’s no cure for redness and excessive flushing, when skin gets thinner and tiny veins start to show through. Try a gentle skincare system designed to calm irritation in the skin (I’ve had a tester trying out Clinique’s new Redness Relief system, which she says works a treat). Try to work out if any “lifestyle factors†are making it worse – spicy food, coffee, exposure to the sun, smoking and red wine are common culprits – and do what you can to minimise them.. See your GP, who may be able to prescribe antibiotic creams or pills, which may help. Intense Pulsed Light treatments, which tackle the broken capillaries in the skin, can certainly improve the look of the skin, but will need repeating every few months."

It's best to see a trichologist to establish exactly why your hair is thinning - stress, age and hormones are all common causes. how to disguise thread veins
Mar 11, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
As my colleague Alice Hart-Davies says, alas, thread veins really require professional attention. Start saving up for IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment, which is the most effective treatment for this. The light zaps and shatters the pigment in the veins that is showing through the skin, and the body will then absorb the tiny broken up particles. It costs about £200-£300 per session depending on how much you are having done and whether your chosen practitioner is based in the middle of London or elsewhere (for reputable practitioners, visit www.cosmeticdoctors.co.uk, the website of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors, which lists people who do this all over the country).

Blushers traditionally come in two formulas - powder and cream-to-powder (additionally there are also stains and liquid tints but for the blusher-virgin these can be a little intimidating.)
On the whole I'm a big fan of cream-to-powder formulas as they are easy to blend and they leave your skin with a pretty flush rather than the full-on '80's power-blush commonly associated with regular powder. Have a look at Bobbi Brown Cream Blush Stick (£16) and Christian Dior Pro Cheeks (£19 for the very best creamy consistencies in beautiful, complexion-flattering tones.
Once you've settled on a formula the trick is to work out where to apply the colour.
The younger you are the more girly an application you can get away with. For a fresh-faced flush, smile and concentrate the colour on the apple of your cheek.
If you are slightly older and want to multi-task with your make-up, using blusher to both add colour and contour your cheekbones, then concentrate on the area of your cheek just below the bone blending it out and up towards your temple and hairline. Just don't forget to blend, blend, blend - 'go-faster stripes' are seriously dated and an unflattering no-no.

How do I reduce the large pores on my face left by teenage acne?
Mar 02, 08
Answer from

It might be worth you looking into having some microdermabrasion. This gentle snad-blasting of the skin (sounds like a contradiction in terms I know)will help refine your skin's appearance, helping to minimise your large pores whilst also improving any acne-related scarring.
I'd recommend you go to a dermatologist to discuss this and any other options they might feel beneficial, so it's worth contacting the British Association of Dermatologists (wwww.bad.org.uk) to find your nearest microdermabrasion specialist.

How old do I have to be to dye my hair?
Feb 29, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
I think there are two ways to interpret this question, and so two different answers. Both relate to age, but at opposite ends of the spectrum.
If you are young - and are asking about whether or not there is a minimum age requirement for tinting, dyeing or highlighting your hair then I think it's important you have this conversation with a parent. Personally, I've been having my hair highlighted since I was about 18. Remember up-keep is expensive so don't start anything you can't afford to maintain.
If, however you are referring to covering grey, then really age isn't as much an issue as the way those grey hairs make you feel. White hairs can appear at any time - premature greying hair tends to be genetic - and if it's bothering you, whether you're 19 or 99 then you should look into your options for concealing it and boost your confidence in the process

Coming from NYC, manicures in London seem like an indulgence as opposed to a necessity. Is there any place that offers a cheap, but good manicure?
Feb 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
You've hit on a real beauty problem here. Unlike State-side nail bars that re cheap, quick and effective, we make more of a fuss about mani's and pedi's. While there are many high st chains that offer a file and re-shape (think of Nails Inc and the New York Nail Company) you won't get the kind of nail-fix you are used to. Again, not cheap, but undoubtedly the best over here, hun out a Leighton Denny-trained nail technician (find your nearest on leightondenny.com). Having trained in Florida he really 'gets' what is needed and demanded by the most discerning of manicure clients. Expect to pay upwards of £30

When it comes to gorgeous summer make-up, no-one holds a candle to the Guerlain Terracotta range. Their Teint Dore gives a great blend-on, wash off tint to legs making it less intimidating than a full on fake tan. Always under threat of discontinuation, it's cult following has saved it from being axed from the Guerlain range many times. If you are having trouble tracking it down take a look on American websites such as Sephora.com who always seem to have it in stock. Shipping is an expensive necessity when buying abroad but take my advice and buy in bulk to save yourself and future hassle.

Expert brow shapers have an uncanny knack of knowing how to tweeze your brows into the best face-flattering shape. They all agree that it's a pretty bespoke beauty service and the 'one-shape-suits-all' approach won't give the best results.

Feb 25, 08
Answer from

Ok you need to mattify the area first. Try priming your eyelids with either an oil absorbing gel, such as Lancome Pure Focus Cream Gel, £44 (lancome.co.uk) or invest in a matt-finish foundation that can be used as a base. Try Clinique for a fantastic range of oil-free cosmetics in creams, stick and liquid formulations. I'd recommend the portable Perfectly Real Compact, £18.50 - simply smooth a little over your eyelid and leave it to dry for a few seconds before applying your eye shadow over the top.

I have mid-dark (asian) skin and find that most sunscreens and sunblocks give my face a weird purplish ashy cast. I've heard that this is because of the titanium dioxide that many formulations use - can you suggest a good product that doesn't contain it?
Also, am I right in thinking that sunscreen goes on after moisturiser but before primer/foundation? Thanks!
Feb 21, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
You're spot on with the titanium dioxide. I'd recommend you try the Organic Pharmacy range as their products specifically promise a non-whitening finish. They use Zinc Clear, offering comprehensive UVA AND UVB film of protection just without the chalky residu. Have a look at www.theorganicpharmacy.com. I'd try the Cellular Protection SPF 25 for everyday use - it's £30 but you get a good old 100ml tube for that.
And yes you've got the order right, unless you are on holiday when I'd recommend you forgo the moisturiser and the make-up and just constantly reapply a good covering of your SPF.

I really can't recommend a one-to-one with an expert from MAc highly enough. Most stores have a fleet of make-up experts, part of the Pro team, who work on fashion shoots and behind the scenes at runway shows. Sculpting and shaping is all part of their remit and you can book a one on one where they show you exactly how to bring out your bone structure.
They have also coincidentally just brought a new range of Sculpt and Shape Powders, £15.50 that dissect the powder pan in two providing a highlighter on one side and a contouring shadow in one. Simply brush a big face powder brush over the compact and sweep along your cheekbones to get a more chiselled look.

Greyblue eyes look great with an understated wash of camel or taupe shades for day. If you want to add a little more definition apply a little chocolate shadow in the crease of team a lighter base with a rich dark eyeliner worn smudge into your lashline.

Your best bet is to book in for a Demalogica facial (www.dermalogica.co.uk) as they will perform extractions on congested skin, but only as and when it's needed and in using a safe steaming technique that limits the chance of scarring. Do try to resist giving it a go yourself though, as it's all too easy to damage the skin around the pore, meaning you might de-clog the skin but you'll be left with a mark that will take far longer to heal than the average spot.

OOOh the best gel eyeliner actually comes in a paint-it-on-from-a-pot formula. Bobbi Brown's Longwear Gel Eyeliner, £13.50, uses it's own tiny paintbrush (sold separately foraround £7) and what I can best describe as a solid 'ink-well' of eyeliner. You need the all important steady hand to work with it, but then (as I'm sure you know) this is also a pre-requisite for eyeliner pens. This version comes in 15 shades from classic black to ivy green, violet and even saphire blue. Gorgeous!
If you want to stay true to a pen, over a pot though, I'd give Mac Liquidlast a go for £13.

Check out the Heaven Beauty Salon in Shifnal (01952 407407) - they do a lot of incredible beauty treatments I don't know for sure that their service menu includes threading, but if they don't do it I'm sure that can recommend a salon nearby.

what kind of filler is best for hollows under your eyes?
Jan 30, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
There is a new use for the filler Restylane that helps to re-inflat the sunken area underneath the eye. Known as a tear trough filler, I recommend you contact BAACS (www.baaps.org.uk)- the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons to find out who offers this treatment as it is particularly fiddly and should only be attempted by a surgeon or dermatologist with ophthalmic knowledge.

Jan 30, 08

I know it sounds ridiculous but the best thing is to invest in a huge sheet of plastic tarpaulin from somewhere like B&Q. It's dirt cheap (£5 or £6), can be wiped down easily, rolled up and stored. This really is the best way to spray without fear of a) damaging your furniture or b) missing a tricky bit on the back of your leg for fear of inadvertantly spritzing the sofa.

Stick to short, structured styles as fine hair will look lank once it gets too long. Instead beef it up with a sexy solid, but short sihouette - think crops and gamine cuts.

Think natural in 2008. Tones of black, brown and red should be muted and not too outrageous, it's only blondes that can afford to go a little crazier, choosing platinums and icy white shades in place of caramels and soft straw shades.

Jan 30, 08
Answer from

Try Elemis Pro Collage Marine Cream, £75 combined with their Pro Collagen Wrinkle Smooth Pen, £85 (both available from timetospa.co.uk). They work to support and boost collagen production helping to smooth out the appearance of lines and wrinkles. These products aren't cheap but effective anti-ageing skincare often isn't. Alternatively give L'Oreal Winkle Decrease Collagen Filler, £14.99 (from Boots) a go - but remember there's only so much skin care can do to improve these problems, and if these naso-labial folds are quite deep then you may have to look at something more invasive, such as a filler.

It contains a skin-tautening ingredient that will help diminish, but not completely rectify, any under eye sagging.

i have dark facial hair. am using vaniqua but still have a shadow. what foundation do you recomend?
Jan 30, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Unfortunately there is no one foundation that can help disguise a shadow. The best thing to do is try to compensate and correct it with a light reflecting powder or foundation that will help to bounce light away from the area, thus illuminating it.
Guerlain Precious Light Smoothing Illuminator, £23 (01932 233 909) will help do the trick. This paint-on concealer-come foundation has a precise paint-brush type tip so it's easy to apply without over-loading your skin (too much product will cling to the hair and only serve to over-emphasise the problem).

looking for hairstyles to suit a 50+ year old, overweight, florid complexion with weak stringy hair coloured ash blonde.Help please.
Jan 30, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
If your hair is stringy I think it's probably best you go for something shorter with a sleek, strong silhouette. Good points of referenc for your stylist would be the actress Anette Benning's hairstyle which is very elegant and well-cut, or Diane Keaton's softly swept style.
If your complexion is florid then the ash blonde of your hair will help to cool down your colouring so I wouldn't think about dyeing it a different colour

Jan 30, 08
Answer from

If you want a really glossy high shine look like Michelle's then I think a good old vegetable dye is what you are looking for. A rich brown would also be much easier to manage and there are so many incredible colour -boosting shampoos and conditioners on the market that I really don't think you'd look back. Plus the re-growth would be less obvious and root-touch-ups not so much of a bother if you took your mousy hair darker.

Jan 30, 08

I think the dryer you saw in Argos is the new BAbyliss 5710 and it would be a good investment buy as it will give you the versatility to wear your hair straight or curly.
As for perfecting your permed hair, the trick is to use great haircare that does most of the hard work for you. Find out what your stylist uses, and also I'd recommend asking him for a private one-on-one session where he can teach you how to quickly and easily care for your hair at home.

Fine hair is best worn in quite structured short styles. Growing it long will only make it look lank and cutting in too many layers will leave thin hair looking even thinner.
If you are bold with your style try a gamine crop a la Audrey Hepburn or if you'd prefer something less severe copy Naomi Watts chin-length style.

What is the ideal weight for a woman of 5ft 2in?
what can be done, without surgery, for lines above the lip?
Jan 30, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
The ideal weight of a 5'2" woman varies according to her frame. If of small build, her ideal weight is 108-121 pounds, a medium frame 118-132 pounds and a larger frame 128-143 pounds. Hope that helps and remember it's really your BMI that's important as if you're sporty you could have more muscle than fat, and muscle ways more than fat so your weight isn't always the best indicator of your healthiness. To calculate your BMI:
Work out your height in metres and multiply the figure by itself
Measure your weight in kilograms
Divide the weight by the height squared (the answer to Q1)
For example, you might be 1.6m (5ft 3in) tall and weigh 65kg (10st 3lb). The calculation would then be:
1.6 x 1.6 = 2.56. BMI would be 65 divided by 2.56 = 25.39. A healthy BMI is considered to be between 18.5 and 24.9
The lines above your lip - are you a smoker? If so the first thing to do is try to wean yourself off as pucker lines around the lip are most often caused by dragging on a fag. I know this is easier said than done but skin care that tackles this problem is a waste of money if you are going to continue smoking.
If you don't smoke, try Bliss Spiff Upper Lip, £35 that helps to soften those vertical lines with a cocktail of collagen-boosting ingredients. (Buy it online at blisslondon.co.uk)

Is it possible to disguise the marks on my nose made by my specticles. I would like to occassionally wear contact lens, but have difficulty hiding these marks.
Jan 30, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
If it is an impression left in the side of your nose then I think this is something you may have to learn to live with. I don't know if fillers can be used to re-plump this area, but I suspect if you were to continue wearing your glasses the marks (even with a filler treatment) would persist.
If it is redness that you are worried about, a good concealer will soon diminish this. I swear by Mac Studio Touch-up Stick, £11 as it delivers accurate in-point coverage and is thick enough, without being cakey, to cover most marks, scars and blemishes. Plus it stays put all day.

I'm 57 and in reasonable condition; however the area around my eyes is causing me some distress. I am lucky to have a mediterrean skin tone but my eye sockets are quite dark and although I use a concealer, I am still very conscious. Without resorting to expensive treatments such as a chemical peel, is there a product available which would eradicate this problem? Oooh and I also have a small fat pocket under my right eye, any tips. Would massaging help? Regards, Jeni
Jan 30, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Whilst massagin can help if you have puffy eyes, I'm afraid fat pockets are a little more resistant to being pummelled. I know surgery isn't the answer you were hoping for, but this might be your best bet.
As for the dark areas around your eyes, these can be treated topically an without more invasiv measures. I'd suggest you try Hylexin (available from skinstore.co.uk) as this is a cream specifically designed to lighten dark circles. Unfortunately it is something that darker, olive-toned skins are susceptible to but the Hylexin will help. It works by reducing the by-products of haemoglobin degradation which cause the red-blue shadows. The skin of the eye area is very thin so it quickly reveals any build-up of this pigmentation, but with Hylexin you can expect to see an improvement of the area within 30 days or your money (£95-ouch!) back. Can't say fairer than that!

which is the best hair-growth inhibitor on the market
Jan 30, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
I think you are best having a professional IPL laser treatment for hair growth.Chemical compounds worry me a little bit and I'd opt for treatment over topical preparations.
I have been having IPL for ages and it really works a treat - you have to have pale skin and dark hair for the best results, but I'm blonde with mousey colouring and I've found it successful.
You do have to commit to this though as it takes anywhere up to 18 months to 2 years to kill the hair completely, but the peace of mind and the smooth results are definitely worth the money.
Now is actually the best time of year to start - pasty winter skin is the perfect foil for laser hair removal as the melanin in tanned skin will prevent you from having the laser therapy (the light energy is absorbed by dark colour so it's important the skin is much lighter than the hair to ensure the laser treats the unwanted hair, and not your skin).
To find your nearest IPL salon try he sk:n clinic salons - they offer this service at their salons nationwide, www.sknclinics.co.uk. Prices vary according to the size of the area treated, upper lips for example costing far less than underarms or legs.

What colour eyeshadows suit fair but sallow skin, blue eyes and very dark hair?
Jan 30, 08

Sallow skin needs a boost with a touch of pretty pastel colour - I'd go for pale lilac, soft lavender and even a sage green. They will look gorgeous with your eyes and hair colour. Have a look at the Chantecaille Lasting Eye Shadow colours (from Space NK) for the best selection of muted shades. They cost around £20 each but last for months and months.

It's sounds as though you're doing all the right things! At 20 and blessed with good skin you could maybe go for something lighter tough in the daytime and save a fuller-face of make-up for night. In which case I'd suggest you try a tinted moisturiser - Laura Mercier has a beautiful, light-weight one, £32, available from Space NK, and while you are in there it's worth looking at the Chanteailler Just Skin too, £52. Both give a good skin-evening coverage and a soft dewy finish.

Take inspiration from Alice's picture on the left. Be sure to avoid super long, one-length styles as they will simply drag your face down, making it seem even longer.

Any tips on putting on eye-liner? Any time I try it's a disaster. I seem to have shaky hands!
Jan 30, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Start by placing your mirror on a work surface, then sitting in a chair with the surface at chest height rest your elbows on the surface in front of the mirror - this will steady your hand. Next close one eye and gently pull the outer corner of your eyelid towards your temple - this creates a smooth taut surface to run the eyeliner over. Finally attempt the application in one deft move - be confident and quick, rather than hesitant and the end result will be far more proficient-looking. I also often apply a pencil liner first then go over it with a liquid liner as the first application acts as a guide.

As you have pale skin, be careful about going too dark with your hair colour. Stick within the rich, russety browns and don't be tempted by anything too chocolate-y as it could leave you looking washed out.
As for eyeshadow, bronze tones would look great, as would olive shades and even brown with a line of navy kohl. Don't feel you have to send a fortune, the Bourjois Little Round Pot range at Boots is fantastic quality, long-lasting (I've had mine for years) and won't break the bank at £4.75

Jan 30, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
The best way to boost your hair growth is to start by massaging your scalp everytime you shampoo your hair. This stimulates the blood supply to your scalp, delivering fresh and nutritious oxygenated blood to the hair follicles, acting as a super-food for your locks.
Also introduce more protein into your diet - preferably a portion at every meal, including, and especially, breakfast. Hair is made of protein and benefits from a protein rich diet. Try kippers or cottage cheese for breakfast and plenty of lean, white meat or oily fish at all other meals. It can take a while to see the results, but you should notice thicker, faster hair growth after a few weeks.

what is the best fake tan. i was tempted to buy st tropez mouse the other day but thought i would check first as it was £20.
Jan 30, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
St Tropez is definitely the best brand, but I'd go for the original formula, rather than the mousse. It might be a thicker lotion and feel trickier to apply but the results are more long-lasting and it's actually less difficult to make a mistake with this version.
Just remember to coat all of your body - the thickness of the lotion doesn't matter as St Tropez Auto Bronzant lotion works by absorption, taking only a tiny, but universal amount into the skin so there's no need to go OTT when rubbing it on, just be sure that everywhere has a nice thorough coating.
As always with fake tan mix in a little moisturiser for dry areas and I'd dilute the tan (50% tan to moisturiser) for your face to give a more natural look. St Tropez have their own moisturiser which contains a tan extending ingredient L Tyrosine. I know it's more expense , but the moisturiser will last for months and it's worth the investment - it makes a great After Sun for holidays.

Lancome have recently revamped their skin care range and have included in it a new and improved formulation for their Renergie Morpholift, £58. It's hard to give you a definitive answer without seeing your skin, so I'd really recommend you visit a Mac cosmetics counter as they have an incredible range of both tones and textures. In the meantime, I'd steer you towards their Studio Fix Fluid Foundation, £19 (mac-cosmetics.co.uk) for a medium-weight base that can be slowly built-up to give more coverage. It leaves skin with a natural, matte finish and it's also long-lasting.
For a yellowy skin tone I'd go for either their NC20 or NC25 shade.

re swimming..how do u get rid of the smell of chlorine on skin despite two showers?? confused and what harm does it do to skin re swimming thank you
Jan 30, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
This is a difficult one as I don't know of a product available here in the UK that helps neutralise chlorine's tell-tale odour. In the states there is a shower gel Aquia (around $7, so £3.50) that has been specifically developed forwith swimmers in mind.
The chlorine will leave your skin dry over time so be sure to invest in a really good post-swim moisturiser. I'm a big fan of Kiehls Creme de Corps, from £9, which is thick and luxurious and also softly scented to help offset the chlorine odour.
Probably my best suggestion would be to see if there is an ozone pool in your area. Using less chemicals, these pools have been proven to offer a cleaner, scent-free swimming experience.

It all really depends how log you have ben over-plucking. how to get rid of my very greasy face please? My make up lasts an hour at best!
Jan 29, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Greasy faces need a two pronged attack - the first being to mattify and prime your face with oil absorbing skincare and the second to choose cosmetics that are naturally oil free and rich in powder to absorb the excess sebum.
I recommend Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser to help get your skin squeaky clean, followed by Mario Badescu Oil Free Moisturiser SPF 17 £18.75 (mariobadescu.com) to give a smooth shine-free finish.
When it comes to make-up keep Benefit's Dr Feelgood £19.50 (House of Fraser stores nationwide) in your purse. This mattifying powder comes in a solid balm form and can be used to touch-up shiny skin throughout the day without becoming cakey, or removing your foundation.

how can I get my straight hair to curl without having a perm?
Jan 29, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
It really depends just how much kink you'd like your hair to have. If you are hoping for full-on curls then you could look at having one of the new perm alternatives offered by L'Oreal salons. Less damaging than a traditional perm, their Animatic treatment only lasts 6 weeks and then returns your hair to it's natural texture.
If you'd like something more subtle I'm a big believer in velcro rollers. Simply blow dry your hair and then wrap inch wide sections of your hair around this self-fixing rollers that hold themselves in place without pins. The smaller the roller, the tighter the resulting curl, and for lasting hold (without a crispy finish) spritz the sections of your hair with Aveda Witch Hazel Hair spray, £9.50.

Hi Alice, i will be 51 in April. My skin is fair and very sensitive and reddens in wind, cold, heat etc. I also have hot flushes and red wine brings them on too. What face creams, makeup etc would be good for me
Jan 28, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Your high colouring is caused by the dilation of blood vessels in your skin, and this can be triggered by a number of things, ranging from alcohol and spicy food to stress and even exercise. Synchrorose skincare is a four-step regime that helps soothe any existing problems whilst also raising your tolerance to the various triggers. Used twice a day, the Cleanser, Toner, Intensive Treatment and Preventative Creams, will visibly reduce any blotchiness in just 10 days. The system costs £69.95, order online at www.skinmed.co.uk.
To desensitise your skin, invest in Dermalogica Climate Control in winter and their Barrier Repair moisturiser in the summer. The first helps support your skin's natural lipid film, providing protection from harsh winter weather, while the second is a waterless moisturiser packed with shea butter and Vitamin C that acts as a humectant keeping water in and enviromental agressors out.
When it comes to make-up, go for matte formulas that will stay put during a flush - many women swear by Boots No 7 Shine Free Make-up Base as a priming product followed by By Terry Perfecting Powder Light Diffusing Reviver, £48 for colour blended with anti-ageing and protective tea-extracts.

Other things I have noticed is that hairs on my legs, under arms, chin, eyelashes etc, is not growing either. I am 67 years of age, and finally it seems the hot flushes are getting less also. This is something to do with ostregin and progesterone ? How can I help my hair to stay thick ? Also, a few weeks ago I watched QVC on the telly and saw a product for making wrinkles disapear on the forhead and around the eyes. It was a kind of gel, used sparingly, and it was only a tempory fix The gentleman and young girl demonstrating it gave the telphone number very quickly to purchase it and I was unable to buy some. It was two small bottles for about £50 I think. Can you help me with these questions ?
Thanks a mill ! Polly Griffin

Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Hi Polly, I'm afraid I can't identify the QVC product, but I have a good alternative and in comes in the form of the Elemis Pro Collagen Wrinkle Smooth Pen, £85. The key ingredient in this brush-on formula is padina pevonica, a sea algae that encourages the skin to produce more calcium to help plump out forehead furrows and other facial wrinkles. It's available to buy mail order on 01278 727827 and studies have shown that a fortnight's continued use can result in up to a 68% reduction in the appearance of expression lines.
I'm sorry to hear about your thinning hair, but it's credit to you that you have had you thyroid tested as this (as I'm sure you know) is the most common cause. Other possible triggers could be stress, a flux (either surge or drop) in hormones and certain medications. Trichologists also agree that it's worth looking back to see if there is any obvious emotional trauma or trigger three months prior to the time you first noticed the thinning - it takes on average three months for a traumatic experience to manifest itself as hair thinning. As a result it will take another three months for any treatment to have a positive effect.
I'd recommend you see a trichologist for a proper diagnosis, but in the meantime try introducing soy isoflavones into your diet which have an estrogenic effect, with none of the sdie-effects associated with HRT. Foods-rich in soy isoflavones include chickpeas, soybeans and legumes so be sure to stock up on these to help boost thicken up your hair growth. Hope this helps

what is the best foundation that gives good coverage, stays on most of the day, for someone just turned 40?
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Try Lancome Absolue Tint, around £20 - it has an SPF 20 for protection and its lightweight formula gives good coverage and your complexion a radiant glow, without looking thick and cakey.
To make sure it stays the day, once applied hold a single ply face tissue over your skin and dust over with a little loose powder to fix the foundation in place.

Hello. I have seen a product on the net called a 'Mini Marvel'. It is an LED beauty product. I am keen on the green version for my uneven skin tone and pigmentation spots. Is this a worthy buy?
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
I haven't tried the Mini Marvel, but my gut reaction is to dissuade you from this kind of DIY gadget. I really feel pigmentation is a problem that should be tackled by a professional and my best advice is to see a dermatologist who will talk you through the most effective forms of treatment. Hyper pigmentation (dark patches) if over treated can become hypo-pigmented (pale and bleached, pigment-less areas of skin) so it's tricky trying to go it alone.
A dermatologist will also be able to identify the exact cause of your uneven skin tone - sun exposure, hormonal flux or your natural colouring (if you have a history of redheads in the family it can make you more susceptible to age spots).
I recommend you get in touch with the British Association of Dermatologists (www.bad.org.uk) to find out more about the condition and derms in your area.

I have noticed liver spots appearing on my hands - im 48! is there anything I can do to remove them please?
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Professional treatments such as IPL - Intense Pulsed Light - can help to diminish these liver spots, but while they may fade there is no guarantee that the treatment will remove them completely.
If you have a high pain threshold book in for a course of Fraxel treatments which uses a different kind of light, a laser in fact, to help eradicate hyper-pigmentation. Fraxel works by targeting the discoloured areas, penetrating deep below the skin's surface to create the effect of a mini trauma that kick-starts the surrounding skin cells to 'heal' these problem areas with lots of fresh, healthy collagen.
If that all sound too invasive, book in for an Environ treatment. Created by Dr Des Fernandes, a Cape Town Plastic Surgeon, his topical creams and professional treatments are rich in vitamins A and C and deliver impressive lightening and brightening results when used on dark liverspots. Milia are tricky to get rid of and you shouldn't try to tackle them yourself. Essentially a tiny cyst filled with keratin - a strengthening substance found naturally in our skin-
no-one really knows what causes them. A qualified beautician, or dermatologist will more than likely treat them by whipping out the keratin blockage with a sterliized needle or a course of microdermabrasion.
As I say avoid the temptation to pick them yourself as they are pretty resilient and you may end up causing tiny, but permanent scars.

Do these vibrating exercise machines work?
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
I'm quite evangelical about Power Plates, and have seen an incredible transformation in my own body from doing this, and only this, form of exercise. The machines work by constantly tricking the body into thinking it will fall over due to the vibrating base plate, and as a result, the body's muscles are constantly contracting and relaxing in a bid to stay upright and balanced. Great for top to toe training, you can also spot check problem areas by performing lunges, press-ups, and even crunches on the plate to leave your body honed and toned. For best results, book three 25 minute classes a week (scheduled on alternate days), and with a trainer to keep you motivated. For the best classes in the capital visit goodvibesfitness.co.uk

What is the best moisturiser for VERY dry ,sensitive over fifty skin.
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
You really need to tackle the dryness and sensitivity before reaching for a skincare product aimed at older skin. I'd recommend a twice daily dose of Estee lauder's Verite range morning and night to help soothe and calm any irritation. Once your skin is feeling happy and re-hydrated, only use Verite in the morning, swapping to Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair in the evening to help fight the signs of ageing while you sleep.

I am allergic to PPD which appears to be in all brown haircolours. Are there any natural ones on the market that are permanent. I have used Naturaltint Reflex bit its temporary and doesn't cover grey.. and only last about a week.
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Natural and permanent are difficult to find in the one product. Your best bet is really going to be henna, but alongside the Naturaltint Reflex, look out for other PPD-free products including Light Mountain and Color the Gray. Both American brands, you can get them online at www.hairsite.com.

Honestly? No. Perms, even today's milder formulations, are harsh on your hair and the results are difficult to predict - often producing too tight curls or lack-lustre kinks that are neither straight nor curled.
It might be time consuming, but you're better off investing in a good pair of curling irons and booking a one-on-one lesson with your stylist who will teach you how to create a perm-like effect without the permanent damage caused by the curl-activating chemicals. This way you're also saved the hasssle of re-growth too, as straight roots and permed ends don't mix.

what hair colour shall i go for?
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Be guided by your skin tone, but also your natural eyebrow colour. If your brows are pale, then you need to steer clear of rich, dark hair colour and go for soft wheat-hued blonde tones or a very light brown - think more mousey than full-on brunette. Likewise if you have dark heavy brows stick to chocolate and ebony shades and don't be tempted to reach for the bleach - just look at Amy Winehouse's latest look. (And remember bleached brows are an absolute no-no, even for bottle blondes.)

I have mild eczema on eyelids. any cream/ointment recommendations?
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Larger Boots stores stock the Avene range, developed by dermatologists in France who specialise in skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. The products contain thermal mineral waters, the same healing water used at the Avene medical centre and spa in Saint Odile. Clinically proven to care for and strengthen sensitive skin, try the Thermal Spring Water Spray, £5.25. Saturate two cotton wool pads with the water and then place the pads over your closed eyes to help soothe and strengthen your irritated eyelids.

how to get younger looking skin
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Young skin is smooth, luminous and even-toned, so be sure to identify which of these complaints you need to address - it may be just one or it could be all three.
If your skin is lined or deeply wrinkled, you might want to consider a mild facial peel. This will also help boost luminosity and tackle the causes of a blotchy complexion - namely sun spots, blemishes and even acne scars.
I whole-heatedly recommend Malvina Fraser at Dr Rita Rakus' Clinic in Knightsbridge (020 7460 7324). She specialises in revitalising old, tired-looking skin and uses a combination of peels, microdermabrasion (a stronger form of exfoliation) and blue light therapy. The latter helps to boost circulation, drain away lymph and generally put a glow back into your cheeks.
Finally, to help keep skin looking younger for longer don't forget to pop on a daily dose of sunscreen to help prevent premature ageing and hyper pigmentation (brown age spots.) Try mixing Dermalogica Solar Booster in with your regular moisturiser to up your skin's UVA and UVB protection.

My shortish hair is thick but very fine and will not hold its style without tough products. I used to use Redken's 'Fat Cat Volumist' and loved it but this has been discontinued. I have a bathroom full of products which do not have the staying power I require. The nearest I've found is TG's 'Catwalk Root Boost'. Can you recommend a product which will thicken and lift at the roots but which will not brush out straight away?
Jan 27, 08

Rebecca Howard
Absolutely! Try John Frieda Volume Thickening Blow Dry Lotion, £5.49. I swear by it as it really helps to beef up lank hair and gives your roots plenty of guts and lasting hold.

I blow dry my (naturally kinky) hair straight before going out. If I go any where where there is any moisture ie if its raining/drizzling or if I go to aclub/party where the atmosphere is hot and damp ,within half an hour I look like I have just had a perm! Any suggestions - which products might be best for me?
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Invest in cleansing and styling products that will help to seal your hair cuticle flat - this will stop it absorbing as much water and prevent that pesky frizzing. Your best buy is the John Frieda Frizz Ease range (available from Boots) which has been recently revamped and expanded to help tackle frizz fallout in both naturally curly and poker straight hair. I'm a big fan of the Frizz Ease Emergency Conditioner - simply spritz it onto towel dried hair before styling/blow-drying.

what are the best products for fine thinning hair
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
It's best to see a trichologist to establish exactly why your hair is thinning - stress, age and hormones are all common causes. For the best advice, make an appointment with Philip Kingsley, the UK's leading trichologist (0207 629 4004) and in the meantime check out his website - www.philipkingsley.com - for dietary help and product recommendations.

what products to use for long very thick dry red hair-preferably natural
Jan 27, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Red hair does tend to be naturally dry, and as a result also quite flat and lacking in radiance. Tackle both of these problems with Matrix Shades Memory Shampoo, £6.50 and Conditioner, £7.95. Packed with protective antioxidants, this system will revitalise your colour, leaving your locks silky- soft and nourished.
If you want a more natural product, try Ole Henriksen's Natural Hair Hydrator, £20 (Liberty). While it's not specifically formulated for redheads, it contains a potent cocktail of paraben-free ingredients (including sea kelp and horsetail extract) to help rehydrate and strengthen hair.

A friend was raving about Ren beauty products. Where can I buy these and what should I go for?
Jan 25, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
They have their own website where you can shop online, or for your nearest stockist call their head office on 020 7724 2900. Alternatively you can get their products from Space NK stores nationwide.
If you're not sure what to go for, I'd recommend their Intro Kit, £12, which contains seven of their best-selling skin care products including a face wash, mask, serum and moisturiser.
If you are worried about what you are putting on your skin, and as a result into your body, then you'll love the REN philosophy and their commitment to making skin friendly products that are free from petrochemicals, sulfate detergents and parabens. Personally I love their Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil made using 100% pure plant oils and 100% natural fragrance.

Is it ok to wear make-up while swimming? Also, I have a large scar on my leg and wondered what would be the best way to cover it up that won't wash off in the pool.
Jan 25, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
On the whole make-up and exercise don't really mix as cosmetics (especially foundations) can stop your skin from breathing properly when you're hot and sweaty - especially if you are using long-lasting, waterproof formulas to swim in. Then there's the facial fall-out. Remember, not all 'waterproof' mascaras will stay put if submerged in water, meaning 'panda eyes' can quickly become a problem.
In this is the case it's worth considering eyelash tinting. Especially if, like me, you look like a boiled egg without any lash definition. Book in with a beauty therapist (most hairdressers offer this service too) and ask for a blue-black tint (unless you are super-pale, when a dark brown is best) for thick, lustrous-looking lashes that won't smudge when you're swimming.
As for your scar. If it's flush, rather than raised, you can conceal any redness or discolouratio really well with Dermablend products (dermablend.co.uk). Designed to conceal scars, burns and birthmarks (I have a portwine stain on my right temple so this is my specialist subject!), the compact formulation is quite thick, so use it sparingly and be sure to dust over the area with some loose powder afterwards to seal the colour in place. Doing this also waterproofs the make-up meaning you can swim without worrying the water will wash it away.

Can you recommend a good foundation or tinted moisturiser without any chemical nasties in it or preservatives, thankyou
Jan 25, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
Look out for The Organic Pharmacy (theorganicpharmacy.com), they have a no-nasties policy and their Sheer Tint £29.95 could be just what you're looking for as it helps to even out skin tone without delivering the kind of full-on coverage you'd expect from a foundation. Available in four colours, the Natural Glow shade suits most skins and the cocktail of natural ingredients, including antioxidants, means it protects as well as perfects your complexion.

Can't get away from it - I need hairspray for a good hair day - what's the best one? Elnett is always great but does anyone have any other faves?
Jan 25, 08
Answer from
Rebecca Howard
You're right, Elnett makes a great bathroom cabinet staple, but if you want to try something new invest in Redken Quick Dry 18. Around £9 (try hqhair.com) it's not cheap, but its long-lasting hold and high shine sheen leaves hair looking great and still feeling silky soft.
If you are looking for an aerosol free alternative, try Aveda Firmata, £9.50. It has pump-action delivery system and a vitamin E-rich formula that helps keep hair healthy and nourished, and all the while keeping your style securely held in place.

I have been able to find an unperfumed hairspray but not any styling products such as mousse or hairwax - these are the only things that I haven't been able to eliminate from daily usage. Can you help?
Feb 10, 08

Gosh you poor thing it can be so tricky eliminating fragrance from your grooming products. I'm not surprised that you are struggling with styling products as so few - if any companies - offer a completely fragrance free range.
There are several websites I can think of such as www.gentlebody.co.uk, but www.jason-natural.com, is probably the your best bet as they have a gel, spray, shine gloss, texturising cream and wax in the range all made from natural ingredients. You can buy online or pick them up from Fresh & Wild outlets. Hope that helps!
