I have made a curry base (as per a famous chef's recipie). It has a very strong cumin flavour and is a bit too spicy for my liking. Can you recommend anything to add to it to make it more subtle please?

You need the power of the humble potato. Adding potato to any dish (and curries are particularly easy to fix this way) - will modify and calm the flavours. Potatoes are also the best thing to add to over-salted recipes.
