I am a 54year old bride to be. We are having a civil marriage in a hotel in November. I want to wear long but do not want to appear 'mutton dressed as .....'. The bridal magazines show wonderful dresses for skinny young ladies. Can you recommend shops or designers?

You could do far worse than take a leaf out of Camilla Parker-Bowles' book. When she married Charles, she played a stunner with her well-chosen, neatly fashionable, age-appropriate outfits. She was described as "stunning" and "elegant" - which is pretty much where you 'd probably like to be on your own wedding day (for the record, it is thought that Camilla endured 10 fittings to get it so right). The other box she ticked is that the ensemble wasn't too fussy or over-the-top for her own civil ceremony in Windsor. The drama really came from the fabulous Philip Treacy hat fluttering in the stiff breeze.

Camilla's outfit came from Robinson Valentine, a low-key couture house which does this kind of dressing which such ease (the label is headed by two women designers, and it shows). Contact them at 4 Hornton Pl London W8 4LZ Tel: 020 7937 2900.

The other designer who excels in this domain is Amanda Wakeley - but expect to part with a good deal of dough. If it's high street for you, you could do worse than try Coast, which has a good line in elegant frocks and neat coats which would look a treat for your big day.
