Question from

Hi Alice,
I feel like a make-up virgin. I haven't worn make up for years (just a little mascara and a little lipstick--very rarely). Do women still wear foundation, blush and then "set" it all with loose powder? I've just turned 45 and feel like brightening myself up a bit. Where should I start? Is there a face-friendly, earth friendly range you can suggest? Thank you, Roni

The moisturisers that gradually self tan your face are really good as pale faces show up dark circles more. Also the skin brighteners - Olay multi radiance for example. Put on over moisturiser and under foundation. I am 61 and use serum (Protect and Perfect), plus moisturiser for older skin plus brightener. Then you don't need much more - a light moisturiser, some blusher (on the apples of your cheeks),some lipstick or lipgloss. Eye makeup has been abandoned as it makes my eyes water but if it didn't I'd wear some powder taupe eye shadow, a little brown liner and maybe mascara.

Hi Roni, well some people do do the full works (foundation, blush, powder) but not usually for everyday wear and once you are past 40, it isn't always kind to the face since the foundation, especially if powdered, can settle into lines and wrinkles and make them that much more obvious. You might find that a tinted moisturiser would be a good start (especially at this year when we all look so unhealthy), possibly with a bit of creamy blush, just to give yourself a bit of colour and even out the complexion (something we can all do with).
For products, take a look at websites like www.glowgetter.co.uk, www.nealsyardremedies.co.uk, www.greenpeople.co.uk and www.energysskincare.com, all of which are face-friendly and earth-friendly, too
