I will be 40 this year. Am I too old to buy the beautiful black leather miniskirt I fell in love with on a recent shopping trip? My legs are my best feature and I'm thinking of Victoria Beckham's philosophy, legs OR cleavage not both, and so would team it with a turtleneck...!

If you've got it flaunt it! In these situations you're more than likely your worst critic, so go with your gut instinct, and try it on in the shop. As long as it is something that you feel you would wear around your mother go for it, after all, even though you have flown the nest, she would be the first to judge the length of anything.

I think the opaque tights are the only way to go. With black block heeled courts and your turtleneck, you would look incredibly chic. Add a pair of enormous sunglasses and you're Audrey Hepburn to go...

If it suits you then go for it! 40 is not old - look at all the celebs that are over 40 and wear all this type of thing. The point is that you have to be comfortable wearing it. If you know you look good in it then anyone who criticises is clearly only jealous. Life is too short to worry what others think all the time - if you really would love it and wear it then go and show those lovely pins of yours off.

The skirt sounds lovely, but I think it is a matter of just how short it is. I don't think anyone above the age of 19 can pull off a skirt that sits right under their bum, however if it is mid thigh length and you are really confident about your legs, I say go for it, I would strongly suggest wearing it with opaque tights though.

Hi, I can relate as I am about your age - still decent figure - and my legs are also my best feature. But seriously, the last time I went above the knee and sat down - I realised I was doing myself no favours!! It's a good idea to take a hand mirror into a fitting room and have a good look from the back, too. If you've got tons of confidence, then okay - but otherwise get something lovely to the knee, as that's a more forgiving and flattering length. (Sorry!)
