Is it true that the more paid for French red wine - the better the quality?

Yes, I think I read somewhere that the tax paid for french red is the same amount per bottle, therefore you pay the same amount of tax on a £3 bottle as you do on a £8 bottle hence the quality of wine in an £8 bottle is better! (Did that make sense?)
