We really enjoy a glass or four of Pineau de Charentes. You don't often find it in the UK but I am reliably informed that Sainsburys sells it. It is available in red or white versions - both are delicious and equally good as a filling for half a melon as served in France.

What about a malt whisky. There are so many to try from strong peaty stles to lighter fresher tastes.A great excuse for lots of entertaing!

Why not try a Calvados? Try instead of brandy which can seem a bit of an old mans drink. I have some 7 year old Havana Club rum, (and the 15 year old is even better). It's a nice alternative to a malt whisky. Very warming in winter, and good in summer served a litle bit cooler or with a chunk of ice.

If you want one that does a "party piece" then try zambucca.
Zambucca is an anise-flavored liqueur, produced by the infusion of witch elder bush and licorice, sweetened with sugar and enhanced with a secret combination of herbs and spices.
White Zambucca is the traditional and generally the more popular variety, having a mellower licorice taste and lighter body than that of black Zambucca.
Italians drink Zambucca as an after dinner drink (usually the white Zambucca with one or two coffee beans in the drink) or they might pour some in their espresso coffee to enhance the flavour.
It is often flambed - which is where the party piece comes in but you could also try it with ice instead of flaming it.

Where to start?! My all-time favourite after-dinner drink is Kummel, a soft spicy smooth sweetish liqueur that is infused with caraway seeds. The best examples are made by Mentzendorff, Bols, de Kuypers and Wolfschmidt. Don't be put off, but some folk regard it as adult gripewater (the stuff you give kids for indigestion and colic), but it is far more delicious! It does have similar soothing properties on the digestion though and despite being 40%abv it is a great way to ease down a full lunch or dinner. In short it is the perfect digestif.

We've been getting into Drambuie recently... not too sweet, but not too burning. A great 'digestif'...
