I'm newly 50, size 14-16, 5 foot 4 inches, so on the dumpy side! I always wear heels but I'm going to New York in May and I've been before and was crippled! How can I wear flats? What do I wear them with? What kind of flats should I wear?

Good question. I've been a heels junkie for years, partly because they add an elegant curve to the foot, partly because heels tend to possess more in the wow department, but chiefly because heels make you feel and look slimmer. But... traipsing around Manhattan in stillies is a fool's idea of fun.
Rather than go for the classic ballet pump, which is so enduringly popular, I'd try Pierre Hardy's new range at Gap, which includes plenty of cute pumps with a bit more flair than the old-school ballet shoe. They'd look great with cropped pants a la Audrey Hepburn.
New York in May will probably be too cold for flip flops or anything seriously open to the elements - so I would even think about a cool little zip-up boot, probably from Camper (see www.camper.com). Wear with slim jeans and go for what fashion folk tend to call "utility chic" - which means functional and funky rolled into one.
Finally, don't choose a fussy flat, or a busy flat, go for something chic and timeless. Personally? My sequin Converse are all I need to get by, though my biker boots come in a very strong second. Have a great trip.
