Well, Vanessa - if you want a book, the one I’d recommend is The Holford Low GL Diet by Patrick Holford (Piatkus, £7.99 or less on Amazon), which makes absolute sense and is a good regime for life. But to lose weight fast, particularly to shed the sort of fat that builds up around waist and thighs, you need to cut right back on carbohydrates, ie keep your carb intake down to 50g a day max. This is what I do when I need to drop half a stone.
· Eliminate from your diet: alcohol (empty calories, no nutrients); sugar of any sort; all refined and processed food; all wheat products (they do tend to convert quickly to fat).
· Eat protein at every meal and snack (it doesn’t have to be a vast chunk of salmon, it could be an egg, or cottage cheese, or a handful of nuts or seeds) and eat more green vegetables and salads than seems feasible (you need the antioxidants, and the fibre).
· Have three meals and a couple of snacks a day, so your blood-sugar levels don’t plummet. It will mean a bit of planning, so you don’t get caught out, say, with nothing between you and dinner but the vending machine, but it can be done. Don’t go overboard on fruit; many fruits are quite sugary.
· Choose organic as much as possible
· Drink buckets of water (fills you up, apart from anything else).
· Do a bit more exercise than usual, or than you want to. Get enough sleep (both of these keep you out of the kitchen). And just for good measure, take a few supplements: good quality fish oils, high strength vitamin C, and a general multivitamin.
· Holford would tell you to give up caffeine. I think you need something to look forward to in the day and that one Americano (or mug of strong tea) won’t hurt.
· And, forgive me the psychobabble, but before you start, get your mind in the right place (it’s never going to be great fun, or particularly easy, to change your way of eating. But if your mind is fighting it every step of the way moaning that you’re being deprived of fun stuff, then it makes it even harder). So start, now, imagining how great you’re going to feel, how proud you’ll be of yourself, and how good you will look, as you move through the weeks ahead.
Good luck!
